{"id":19162,"date":"2023-02-02T10:35:35","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T16:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sterling.com\/?p=19162"},"modified":"2023-02-02T10:35:35","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T16:35:35","slug":"decryptingcloud-part1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/?p=19162","title":{"rendered":"Decrypting Cloud for the Future &#8211; Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Nathan Bennett \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Cloud Practice Lead<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>In this three-part future-feature journey, we\u2019ll look at the connections between \u201ccloud,\u201d \u201cmulti-cloud,\u201d and even more nebulous terms, like \u201csuper-cloud.\u201d We\u2019ll start at the basics, talk first about what is meant by \u201ccloud,\u201d and then build on that inquiry so we can better understand the new terms and determine whether they are \u2018new\u2019 at all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re bombarded in IT with different uses for the word \u201ccloud\u201d \u2014 from \u201cprivate cloud\u201d to \u201cpublic cloud\u201d to \u201cmulti-cloud\u201d and more. Let\u2019s try to shed some light on these cloudy terms. Our cloud journey may sound far away in the future, but the future may become more present to us as it starts to look like our past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Let\u2019s Talk About \u201cCloud\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though difficult to understand in many contexts, \u201ccloud\u201d is here to stay. Normally, customers refer to their own data centers as \u201cprivate cloud\u201d and then to the larger \u201ccloud\u201d companies\u2019 data centers as \u201cpublic clouds.\u201d Then, there are job titles like \u201cCloud Platform Engineer\u201d and \u201cCloud Architect,\u201d which refer less to locations and more to operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand \u201ccloud,\u201d let\u2019s also talk about \u201cdata center,\u201d taking it to mean a place for networking, storage, and compute.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Picture-1-607w499h.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19163\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Picture-1-607w499h-300x247.png\" alt=\"This is a Datacenter\" width=\"403\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Picture-1-607w499h-300x247.png 300w, https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Picture-1-607w499h.png 607w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The first hot-take I\u2019ll throw in here is that simple network + storage + compute does <em>not<\/em> a cloud make. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloud has two essential components: self-service and platforms. This is evident when we think about the different cloud business-models, such as infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS); platform-as-a-service (PaaS); software-as-a-service (SaaS); and function-as-a-service, commonly termed \u201cserverless\u201d (FaaS). What each has is a platform through which you can access for yourself \u2014 or, \u2018self-service\u2019 \u2014 the function that the platform conveys. IaaS allows you to self-service infrastructure through that platform (or, graphical user interface [GUI]), and the same goes for PaaS, SaaS, and FaaS. They all allow you to self-service what you need on the platform provided. This does <em>not <\/em>work on simple network + storage + compute. For a datacenter to become a \u201ccloud,\u201d it must have a platform for self-service allowing the raw components to be accessed and utilized.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image2-624w616h.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19164\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image2-624w616h-300x296.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image2-624w616h-300x296.png 300w, https:\/\/sterling.com\/stargazer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image2-624w616h.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCloud\u201d is also defined by the context in which the word is used. So, when we use the terms \u201cprivate cloud\u201d or \u201cpublic cloud,\u201d we are indicating who is in control of the self-service platform. \u201cPrivate\u201d would mean <em>you <\/em>are in control, and \u201cpublic\u201d would mean <em>they<\/em> are. A phrase like \u201c<em>We<\/em>\u2019re going to the cloud\u201d would indicate moving to a public-cloud model. \u201cWe\u2019re going to the cloud\u201d is a figure of speech, of course. You\u2019re not going anywhere. You\u2019re just changing the <em>model<\/em> by which you consume and provision resources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCloud services\u201d is another term floating around. It\u2019s more easily understood because it speaks to a specific solution consumed on a \u201ccloud\u201d and utilized by the customer.
